Coronavirus (COVID-19) is a respiratory illness caused by a new virus. Symptoms range from a mild cough to pneumonia. First reported in December 2019 in Wuhan City in China. The outbreak was declared a Public Health Emergency of International Concern on 30 January 2020 by the World Health Organization (WHO).
Coronavirus and the flu are both contagious viruses that cause respiratory illness. While public health officials are still learning more about symptoms and severity of COVID-19 vs. the flu, the best way to prevent either illness is to take everyday precautions including frequent hand washing; refraining from touching your eyes, nose and mouth; and staying home if you are sick.
The management of the Portugal Madeira Sydney Social and Cultural Sports Club Limited asks all persons that are experiencing fever and flu-like symptoms, have been in contact with a Coronavirus patient or have travelled outside of Australia within the past two weeks to please avoid public places including our clubhouse in order to help prevent spreading the virus unknowingly.
In Australia the risk of infection with the Coronavirus is minimal, nevertheless cases of Coronavirus infections have been reported on the media, including cases where persons have acquired the virus from being in contact with persons that were infected with it.
Persons may be carrying the Coronavirus for up to two weeks before symptoms start to show up.
Both State and Federal governments have issued public health notices where they recommend that anyone experiencing flu-like symptoms must:
- Contact your Family Doctor
- Stay home. Do not go to work or school
- Wear a face mask while outside your home.
