Portugal Madeira Club

Portugal Madeira Sydney Social & Cultural Sports Association was founded in 1968 by the Portuguese speaking community of Sydney’s inner western suburbs in Dulwich Hill.

On that same year the members voted-in a subcommittee to build and run a soccer club in order to compete in the local state soccer championship of New South Wales.  The Dulwich Hill Football Club, was born and today it competes in the Football NSW’s National Premier League 3 & National Premier Youth Tier 2.

On the 17th of June 1985, the Association incorporated and become the Portugal Madeira Sydney Social & Cultural Sports Club Limited, known locally as the “Portugal Madeira Club” of Marrickville.  On the 22nd of January 1988 we officially opened our current facilities at 1-3 Denby St in Marrickville.

The club members decided wisely to stay within the city of Marrickville three main reasons:

  • Marrickville is the twin city of Funchal, the largest municipality in the archipelago of Madeira.
  • Marrickville was then a city with a large number of Portuguese speaking households.
  • Marrickville is easily accessed by public transport and right in the inner west region of Sydney.

At Portugal Madeira Club we celebrate and promote the Portuguese language and culture in all of its diversity in Sydney.  Our social club facilities have always been at the service of our members for over thirty years.  Our current facilities were opened to the public on the 22nd of January of 1988 and were opened officially by the following three members:

Over the years, we have become affectionately known in Australia, New Zealand and Southeast Asia as “Sydney’s Portugal Madeira Club”.

We host and organize social and cultural events with live music every weekend accompanied by locally sourced delicious dishes prepared by our own chef in the traditional Madeiran way.

Our club provides indoor and outdoor areas for its members and their guests to enjoy during the club’s business hours.
